PS3 Dark Sector Went Through Some Troubled Times
by M. Renton
Dark Sector, the third person shooter from the dev Digital Extremes, is set to be released on both PS3 and Xbox 360 next month.
However, it looks like it took a bit more work to get the PlayStation 3 version working up their standards.
"So, yeah, this is the PS3 version, umm… it looks just as good as the 360 version, which we’re very happy about. Towards the end we started having some serious conversations about what we were gonna do, uh, but we ended up pulling it off, so we’re very proud of that," he told Ripten in an interview.
80GB PS3 Lives In New Bundle, Still Some Backwards Compatibility
by Robert Gordon
It looks like the 80GB PS3 still has some legs after all.
Sony announced today that there will be a new PlayStation 3 bundle with the 80 gig model which will be packed in with not only Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots but the North American debut of the Dual Shock 3 wireless controller. The bundle will retail for US $499.
"Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility," confirmed Al De Leon, Public Relations Manager at Sony.
PS3 PlayTV Recordings: Do Anything You Like!
by Chris Naughton
While it seems like everything is trending towards all digital media having some sort of DRM protection, it looks the PS3 television receiver/DVR add-on will not be burdened with the restrictions.
Mark Bunting, who is a producer at Sony's Cambridge Studio, where the PlayTV software is being developed, gave the scoop about the PlayStation 3 peripherial to Eurogamer.
According to Bunting, the video files recorded on PlayTV will be able to be put on a memory stick, hard drive, a computer...where you want to take it.
Trailer For PS3 Game On The Down Low Leaves Reporter 'Speechless'
by Billy Brown
It looks like the melancholy we were feeling after there was no substantial PS3 news that came from the Game Developers Conference was all for naught. At least one big thing did indeed go down.
Apparently, Sony showed a select number of people a trailer for an unannounced mystery PlayStation 3 title at GDC that was absolutely mindblowing.
The reason we haven't heard about it until now?
Alas, No 120GB PS3 Or In-Game XMB Yet: Sony Talks PS3 Home
by Billy Brown
The Game Developers Conference was a bit of a letdown. Sony didn't use the GDC to make any announcements like the much anticipated in-game XMB addition or the official phasing out of the 80GB PS3 for a larger model.
Heck, there wasn't even a keynote. Sony gave PS3 News no PlayStation 3 news to talk about.
But that's all behind us now, so it's back to waiting for what's in store this year...most importantly Home.
SCEA's vice president of product marketing Scott Steinberg talked about the subject of Home in an interview with Gameindustry.biz and confirmed once again that it's coming out this year.
Another Sign That The 80GB PS3 Will Soon Be A Goner
by Chris Naughton
It's almost a lock as No Country For Old Men is to win Best Picture on Sunday -- the 80GB PS3 will soon be a thing of the past.
Best Buy first put the writing on the wall with an alleged memo that PS3Fanboy received and posted.
"The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time. Only the 40GB version of PlayStation 3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time," it reads.
IGN followed with a story that GameStop was doing the same. According to IGN's sources, a new 120GB model is on the way which will be bundled with the Dual Shock 3 controller.
Sony Tries To Cool Down PS3 Home, In-Game XMB Rumors
by Chris Naughton
There are multiple rumors flying around that both PS3 Home and in-game XMB will be coming very, very soon.
And let's face it -- Sony fanned the flames by unveiling a shirt at the Game Developer's Conference that reads "In-Shirt XMB". After all, in-game XMB is by far the most requested feature for PS3.
Many took the shirts as a hint that the company will be making an announcement any day now.
Not so fast, says Sony.
"It’s us being cheeky," explained Jeff Rubenstein, Sony Social Media Manager on the PlayStation blog. "It’s a developer’s conference, not hardware or firmware, so no announcements on that front this week."
Free Radical: PS3 Haze Is Not Vaporware
by Billy Brown
It seems like every time we're getting close to a release for Haze on PS3, it gets pushed back once again.
The PlayStation 3 game was originally slated to be released last November, then December, followed by early this year, and lastly fiscal year 2008, which runs into 2009.
But Free Radical insists that the game is far from being vaporware. In a recent forum post on the official Ubisoft website, a spokeperson confirmed once again that Haze is truly coming to PS3.
In fact, they went as far as to guarantee that there have been massive improvements because of the wait.
PS3 MotorStorm Dev Wants To Rule The Racing World
by Robert Gordon
While MotorStorm has been a successful PS3 title, Evolution Studios has gone on the record as saying that it's only the tip of the iceberg.
Gameplay producer Jed Ashworth recently talked about the future with Eurogamer, and it appears that the dev is shooting for nothing less than world domination...in the reaction racing world, at least.
"We have the aim of turning our launch-window title into a sustained, massive brand," he told Eurogamer. "We plan to dominate reaction racing for a long time. We'd never aim any lower."
Payton: PS3 Exclusive MGS4 Won't Appear At GDC
by Chris Naughton
If you're planning to attend the Game Developers Conference to get a look at the PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, you're looking at world of disappointment.
Associate producer Ryan Payton recently discussed MGS4 on the Kojima Productions podcast and broke the news that the game won't be at the GDC.
However, there's no indication that the title is going to be delayed again. Reps have publicly insisted that the game will not suffer any more delays, and we'll have to take them at their word.
PS3 In-Game XMB Confirmed By Sony?
by M. Renton
It looks like PS3 gamers may finally be able to chat in the middle of gameplay as Sony has promised, and it may be sooner rather than later.
On the official PlayStation 3 website, the following message was posted on the page, but was quickly taken off for some mysterious reason:
Friends And Messaging
Talk to others during game play, say hello anytime you're online, or have a video chat with an Eye camera; USB Camera or headset.
Factor 5 Hints At PS3 Lair 2.0
by Billy Brown
Lair hit PS3 with a lot of potential, but it turned out to have one itsy bitsy problem -- the Factor 5 title is virtually unplayable.
Sure, the PlayStation 3 game has gorgeous graphics and a killer soundtrack, but it forces gamers to use the PS3 SIXAXIS' tilt as the only method of control, and it fails miserably in that regard.
Console Monster's review summed it perfectly with the following phrase: "This tedious control system just turns the main focus of the game, the battles, into a task rather than an enjoyment. Not only does the SIXAXIS control scheme not feel comfortable or natural, it just doesn’t work. And the fact that you can’t even turn it off makes it even more of a burden."
Activision: We Know PS3 Development
by Chris Naughton
When it comes to development, there a lot of companies that are still trying to figure out Sony's PS3.
It's a still a relatively new technology, and it's certainly easier to work on platforms that they already know and are comfortable with.
Activision, on the other hand, appears to have a firm grip on what it takes to make quality product for PlayStation 3. And they're quite proud of it.
“What you are seeing with many publishers is they are unable to simultaneously develop and launch on the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Instead, they develop and release one SKU at a time or they simply don’t release a PS3 SKU at all. Call of Duty 4 represents the best-in-class next-generation development, making it the number one selling title of all time on the PS3," said Michael J. Griffith, president & CEO of Activision's Publishing during the latest conference call discussing earnings.
PS3 Slow Install Redux: This Time It's Hot Shots Golf
by M. Renton
It looks like the PS3 Devil May Cry 4 situation may be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to slow initial install times.
When DMC4 hit PS3 in Japan, the shocking news hit that it took about 20 minutes before people could actually play the game. However, it was a one-time thing. Once installed, load times were superquick.
Now comes word that another game coming from Japan first has similar issues. PS3 Fanboy is reporting that when they gave Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds a go, the wait time to play was not thrilling.
PS3 Scares Up Some Monster Madness: Grave Danger
by Billy Brown
The name of the PS3 version of Monster Madness has been revealed by SouthPeak Games -- it just doesn't get more exciting than this!
SouthPeak promises that Monster Madness: Grave Danger on PlayStation 3 will be a more evolved version of its Xbox 360 predecessor.
"Every Zombie, Werewolf and Vampire has been recalled to square one," the pub insists.
Other improvements scheduled include better camera angles, an improved control scheme, quality graphics and expanded online multiplayer.
