Will PS3 Retailers Scalp On eBay?

By Donald Kaufman

O morality, where art thou?

PS3 eBayRemember the stories about how hard it was to find an Xbox 360 in the early days? Oddly enough, Microsoft's next-gen console couldn't be found in local stores, and yet there were excesses on eBay, selling for much more than the retail price. How could such a thing happen?

Easy.

Some devious retailers were simply hoarding their supply. Instead of selling the Xboxes for retail, they figured they could make much more money selling the systems on eBay.

Why is this of any interest to us PS3 aficionados, you ask?

Because the same thing is probably going to happen with our beloved Playstation 3. After all, those 360 sellers made a killing on eBay. Sure, if there were any justice in the world, their souls would be damned to hell for being so unscrupulous. But there's already websites popping up with detailed instructions on how to fleece the market, so the battle lines are being drawn.

What can you do to stop such bad and evil things from occurring? Sadly, there's not that much recourse out there. The ideal suggestion would be that as a society, if we all pledge not to buy the PS3 for insane prices on eBay, then it will force the sellers to go back to selling them the fair and equitable way.

Fat chance of that happening.

So we'd advise you to pre-order the Playstation 3 the second you can. The only major retailer we're aware of that has the PS3 for pre-order is Toys R' Us, but once Sony announces pricing details, your options will be limitless.

And don't pre-order more than one, wiseguy.
